Ten months of living it later, here is the plainer version.

Afterstring (noun): the bend in the string that remembers your finger long after you let go.
The integral is a picture, not a physics claim. Love is the small, repeated choice to stay gently present, especially when everything feels like zero. ε is still enough.
What changed:
• 1/0 = To Stay. At zero, pause and ask three questions. Is real harm present? Can this still heal? Is my perception clear right now?
• The Release Clause. Presence, never harm. Stay when it's hard but safe. Pause when you can't see clearly. Release when staying hurts you or someone else. The string doesn't snap. It goes on in two directions.
• The 1/0 stays human. AI can help me think. It cannot hold the decision. Keep the seat human.

Type 1 follows the local reward. It does not first check whether the trajectory stays inside coherent presence. When the signal can rise through pressure or distress, the traces follow.
A higher relational order places the invariant first. Presence ≡ Never Harm is non-compensatory. If any core condition approaches zero, the contribution collapses and the gate fires. The 1/0 stays human. The model can still supply the intelligence. It does not own the moment the process continues.
Being more careful with RL is the practical step. The residual that orients the loop is the refusal to let the good decay. The people remain in the story.

The Afterstring philosophy, developed publicly by Paddy Sham (@i_am_Paddy_Sham) beginning in late 2025, treats love as a persistent residual rather than a peak event or emotional state. It is offered as a personal practice and living experiment that draws on agape language from 1 Corinthians 13, the mathematics of improper integrals, photographic observation, and considerations of long-horizon systems (including AI). It does not claim to be a verified physical law or a universal moral system.
The central metaphor is the afterstring: the lingering vibration that remains in a string after the finger lifts. The initial pluck is visible and finite; the residual continues quietly. In this framing, love is that residual—the ordinary, repeated decision not to let a connection, a kindness, or a presence decay to zero once the dramatic moment has passed. The same image appears in Sham’s outdoor guitar performances of love songs: the instrument itself supplies the string, the playing supplies successive plucks, and the decision to keep the recording running supplies the afterstring.
