The narrow stone path stretches forward between rows of sleeping machiya. Warm earthen walls framed in dark timber rise quietly, their bamboo sudare lowered like gentle veils. A lone figure walks ahead, becoming one with the morning’s hush.

Before the tourists arrive. Before the lanterns glow. Just the historic heart of Kyoto breathing slowly under a soft, clouded sky.
