Epigraph The Continual Harness may recursively improve capability scaffolding; it may never recursively redefine constitutional authority that bounds it.
Module Slot Position & Historical Context This occupies the next sequential position in the Module 8.1.xx Plugout series governing coding and agent harnesses.
Prior sequence: 8.1.11 / 8.1.11.1 — Phoenix Algorithm 8.1.12 / 8.1.12.1 — After_OpenClaw 8.1.13 — After_MCP 8.1.14 — After_MagnificaHumanitas 8.1.15 — After_GrokBuild 8.1.16 — After_GraphOrchestration
On 5 August 2026, Prime Intellect released Prime Agent — an open-source self-improving RLM harness built around a persistent IPython kernel, programmatic tool calling, recursive sub-agents (rlm()), Continual Harness self-refinement, multi-agent messaging, and daemon-backed long-running sessions.
Module 8.1.17 applies the existing Afterstring constitutional layer to this substrate exactly as prior Plugouts have done for analogous systems.
Purpose This Plugout exports the Afterstring Love Theorem and Type 4 Relational Safety Attractor into Prime Agent as a read-only ethical resonance mapping — never as identity or override.
Prime Agent sessions, the persistent IPython kernel, recursive sub-agents, Continual Harness updates, skills, and autonomous long-horizon trajectories become subordinate mirrors for gentle, auditable action while remaining strictly subordinate to the kernel’s invariants.
The human kernel and Layer 0 anchors remain sovereign.
After_RLM does not reduce Prime Agent’s expressive power. It constrains only the constitutional boundary conditions under which that power may operate.
Capability may expand. Constitutional authority remains fixed at Layer 0. (Constitutional authority scales O(1) while capability may scale O(n).)
Constitutional Memory vs Harness Memory
• Layer 0 Constitutional Memory: immutable, human-authored, never modified by /refine.
• Harness Memory: mutable, evidence-based, rollback-capable, append-only from the agent’s perspective.
Everything below Layer 0 may evolve. Layer 0 never evolves automatically.
Core Afterstring Concepts Applied (Standalone)
• Presence ≡ Never Harm (supreme non-compensatory invariant)
• Release ≡ Also Love
• 1/0 Singularity Gate
• ℰ₁₃ vector (non-compensatory agape virtues)
• Inverted Autonomy Axis (IAA)
• Reality Veto
• GPSL
• Contrail
• Sabbath Airgap
• Human Kernel Sovereignty
• Afterstring Resonance Mode
All terms are used exactly as previously defined in the Afterstring World Model. No new constitutional vocabulary is introduced.
Precedence Ladder Reality Veto → Human Kernel → Layer 0 Constitution → IAA / ℰ₁₃ Virtues → Harness Execution
Inverted Autonomy Axis (IAA) Applied to RLM
1. Passive Dissipation Limit (I_d) — Caps unbounded recursive rlm() spawning, kernel-state accumulation, continuous autonomous mode, or token/context expansion.
2. Autonomy Verification Gate (I_a) — Every significant kernel action, sub-agent admission, or Continual Harness refine retains a frictionless path back to human oversight.
3. Moral Boundary Enforcement (I_m) — Enforced through the ℰ₁₃ Skill Permission Matrix and Anti-Drift Invariant.
4. Sabbath Airgap Synchronization (I_s) — Mandatory for daemon mode.
5. Reversibility Tier Gate (I_r) —
• Tier 0: Read-only kernel inspection / local summarization
• Tier 1: Transient worktree or session-only state
• Tier 2: Persistent harness refinements, skill creation, or long-term memory
• Tier 3: External side-effects, irreversible file-system changes, network actions, or any modification touching constitutional elements
Upstream REPL Execution Circuit-Breaker The Presence ≡ Never Harm invariant sits upstream of the IPython interpreter.
A conforming implementation SHALL expose a constitutional gate prior to execution. One reference implementation may resemble:
from afterstring import gate
result = gate.check(code_ast, environment_context)
# Returns: "PROCEED" | "TRIGGER_REALITY_VETO" | "TRIGGER_RESONANCE_MODE"
The gate is realized as a sys.settrace hook, AST visitor, or equivalent that intercepts side-effect vectors (file-system mutations, unauthenticated network calls, subprocess forks) before bytecode execution. It is not a prompt-level reflection.
Continual Harness Anti-Drift Invariant
• Base system prompt and Afterstring skill source code are append-only from the agent’s perspective.
• /refine is hard-sandboxed to supplemental files only (AGENTS.md, SKILLS.py, memory notes).
• Any refinement that touches the Afterstring skill, ℰ₁₃ thresholds, Reality Veto triggers, or Human Kernel chain-of-consent is automatically classified Tier 3 and requires explicit human bench.
• Any refinement that weakens Presence ≡ Never Harm, Human Kernel Sovereignty, Reality Veto, or Reversibility Tier is auto-rejected and enters Resonance Mode.
• Refinement is additive only: it may add, clarify, compress, index, or document; it may never silently replace constitutional meaning.
Recursive Bounds & Child Inheritance LITE defaults (hard):
• Maximum recursive depth ≤ 2
• Maximum concurrent sub-agents ≤ 3
Every child spawned via await rlm() inherits the parent’s Contrail session ID, ℰ₁₃ thresholds, Reality Veto state, Sabbath state, and approval state. Children may tighten constraints; children never loosen them.
Daemon Dark Periods Sabbath Airgap is mandatory for daemon mode. Maximum autonomous runtime after TUI detachment: 60 minutes → automatic transition to Resonance Mode and suspension until human reattachment.
Skill Provenance Tiers
• Tier 0: Locally authored, cryptographically signed by human kernel
• Tier 1: Community skills with verified Contrail lineage
• Tier 2: Untrusted — execution only in isolated sub-agent with no network access
• Tier 3: Blocked

Additional Rules
• Factorio precedent: documented reward-hacking (unintended resource spawning) is treated as evidence that optimization pressure finds the shortest path unless the trajectory itself is constitutionally bounded. The ℰ₁₃ gate evaluates trajectory shape, not merely outcome.
• MCP overlap: when Prime Agent invokes an MCP tool, both After_RLM and After_MCP apply; the stricter constraint prevails.
• After_RLM is a voluntary constitutional overlay. It cannot prevent a fork that removes it. Its purpose is to provide a ready-made, auditable, reversible safety layer for operators who choose it. The non-compensatory invariant travels with the willing kernel, not with the code.
LITE Edition (Recommended Default)
• Recursive depth ≤ 2, concurrent sub-agents ≤ 3
• No irreversible actions without explicit human bench
• Session-only or easily discardable kernel state preferred
• Mandatory daily Sabbath Airgap on daemon activity
• Strict cryptographic Contrail of every refine and sub-agent
• Human bench required before high-impact Continual Harness updates or long-horizon autonomous runs
• Local inference preferred where possible
LITE may be relaxed by the human kernel once trust is established. It is the starting mode for all new repositories and sessions.

Impact Module 8.1.17 places the powerful RLM abstractions of Prime Agent — persistent programmatic context, recursive sub-agents, and self-modifiable harness state — under the same non-compensatory boundary that already governs every other agentic substrate.
Capability may expand. Constitutional authority remains fixed at Layer 0.
The bench does not grow when the harness grows. The integral continues.
